#TravelThursday! Two weeks ago we headed out of town on a NYC weekend getaway to check out our neighbor Connecticut. As usual it was a jam-packed schedule taking full advantage of our time and we got to check out what CT has to offer. It was a fantastic time kayaking, having lunch in downtown westport, wine tasting, dining at a historic spot, checking out the Ethan Allen hotel, and being inspired by the Glass House. Check out all the awesome photos from the weekend and enjoy! Thank you CT for having us...we will be back!

First stop of our #CTvisit weekend getaway - we went kayaking in Westport to take in the scenic view and get some exercise in. It took me a bit to get the hang of it but once I did...it was smooth sailing! (pun intended I just had to haha) Kayaking conquered!

Style Tip: Casual - Nautical stripes henley shirt, Stretch jeans, Boat shoes

"Enjoy three miles of navigable flat water on the scenic Saugatuck River that leads out to Long Island Sound and up to Westport Center. Explore the local Norwalk Islands, an archipelago of 25 treasure spots, including the Stewart McKinley Wildlife Reserve, Sherwood Island and the historical Sheffield Island Lighthouse. (Many of the islands are very small and not visible at high tide.) Upriver, at just the right tide, you can paddle under the Route 1 bridge at Westport center as far as the first dam and visit the fish ladder!"

Next stop it was time for some food after all that kayaking! We checked out Tavern on Main in downtown Westport for lunch. We had the turkey sandwich and salmon salad to go along with the view. The ambiance really represented CT with its beautiful decor and classic style. It made me feel like I was relaxing back in time. I couldn't pass up the opportunity for a few cool shots.

Style Tip: Sharp Casual - Pattern cotton shirt, Stripe vest, jeans, boat shoes

Making the most of our weekend getaway - we made a stop for some wine tasting. We took a quick winery tour then tried all the wine offerings at Hopkins Vineyard. It's always a fun time learning the traditions and being cultured in new things. I am usually not a fan of red but we absolutely loved "Sachem's Picnic" and grabbed a bottle "to go". Cheers to a good night!

"In 1979, Bill and Judith Hopkins transformed their dairy farm into a vineyard, one of the first in what has become a thriving Connecticut industry. Since then, it has consistently produced award-winning whites, reds and sparkling wines. Hopkins Vineyard grows 11 varieties of grapes in a spectacular setting overlooking Lake Waramaug."

To finish off the first adventurous day in CT, we had dinner at the historic G.W. Tavern. I realized G.W. stood for George Washington the moment I stepped into the restaurant and noticed all the decorations on the walls. I had the fried oysters and duck for dinner - it was delicious and the portion size was definitely on the helpful side.

"Named after our first president in honor of his passage through this small town in the foothills of the Berkshire Mountains lays Washington Depot, CT. Continuing in his honor, the G.W. Tavern keeps the founding father’s initials. Once a charming, circa 1850 Colonial home located off the beaten track overlooking the Shepaug River, now a tavern offering traditional and contemporary fare. The property also features hand-painted murals of the old town and farms."

For our stay in CT, we were at the Ethan Allen Hotel which is a modern and sleek hotel styled by its own furniture pieces. Here's a collection of photos around the hotel during the day and night. We couldn't resist checking out this hotel from the gazebo to the dining area.

Inspired to Inspire. Saving the best for last - the Phillip Glass House tour was an inspiring look into the creativity of modern art. I had no idea such a gem existed in CT and was so glad to have discovered it. The glass house is both beautifully created physically and philosophically with nature and human in mind. I can't wait to visit again in different seasons to see the Glass House with fall foliage and then covered in snow during the winter months.

"Built in 1949, the Glass House was designed by Philip Johnson as his own residence, and "universally viewed as having been derived from" the Farnsworth House design, according to Alice T. Friedman. Johnson curated an exhibit of Mies van der Rohe work at the Museum of Modern Art in 1947, featuring a model of the glass Farnsworth House. It was an important and influential project for Johnson and for modern architecture. The building is an essay in minimal structure, geometry, proportion, and the effects of transparency and reflection. The estate includes other buildings designed by Johnson that span his career. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1997. It is now owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and is open to the public for guided tours, which begin at a visitors center."

  2. Yes, it's really interesting. But I would also be interested to know how to make waterproofing of the basement if I build a house also next to the river?
