EGYPT Travel - Alexandria Photo Diary:

On one of our days in Cairo, we decided to visit the city of Alexandria on a day-trip by hopping on a train from the Cairo Railway Station. The differences between Alexandria and Cairo is night and day. Right away we were greeted by the beautiful waterfront view and chilly breeze. Since the city is located on the North part of Egypt and right by the water, the temperature dropped quite a bit so we needed to layer up with a jacket. We ended a great day of exploring Alexandria with a fresh seafood dinner and an incredible view of the gorgeous sunset at The Greek Club.

Roman Amphitheatre - Just steps from the train station, the Roman Amphitheater is the only known Roman amphitheater in Egypt.
+ We stood at the acoustic center of the amphitheater, marked by a small plaque and heard our voices amplified back to us. It's amazing to see how advanced architecture was back in the days - they invented their own surround sound!
+ We were lucky enough for a worker to let us in forbidden areas and see the "backstage" to where they used to keep the lions and other animals, in exchange for some baksheesh (tips) of course.
+ There is also an open-air museum showcasing some ancient Egyptian statues and other treasures uncovered from underwater.

Bibliotheca Alexandria: During the reign of Alexander the Great, Alexandria was the capital of his empire and was the most powerful and influential city in the region. The original library was founded in 288 BC and held around 700,000 scrolls. Unfortunately, the Alexandria library was destroyed and the Bibliotheca Alexandria is intended to recapture this ancient library.
+ Beautiful multi-level library with striking modern design that reminds me of Inception.
+ The glass ceiling pouring in light from the sea makes this library an absolute must see in Alexandria!

Citadel of Qaitbay:  This citadel was considered the most important defensive strongholds for Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea Coast. Great for a sunny afternoon visit - the view from the castle overlooking the sea was really worth the visit and makes for some great photography
+ Enjoy sweet snacks on the street around the area of Citadel gates like the Freska Cart - snacks made of crispy wafer with sesame, peanuts, or coconut.
+ Lots of restaurants nearby - Greek Club for fresh seafood dinner and Azza Ice Cream for authentic Egyptian ice cream (tagged on the map below)

  4. Flights help you save a lot of time, and to get from the airport to the city center or to your hotel as quickly as possible, you can use transfer services. I like to use AtoB transfers from faro airport because it is secure and not too expensive. The drivers of this service are always very pleasant and can tell you a lot of interesting things about the city.
